Understanding Molecular Simulation: From Algorithms to Applications by Dan Frenkel, Understanding Molecular Simulation: From Algorithms to Applications explains the physics behind the "recipes" of molecular simulation for materials science. Computer simulators are continuously confronted with questions concerning the choice of a particular technique for a given application. A wide variety of tools exist, so the choice of technique requires a good understanding of the basic principles. More importantly, such understanding may greatly improve the efficiency of a simulation program. The implementation of simulation methods is illustrated in pseudocodes and their practical use in the case studies used in the text. Since the first edition only five years ago, the simulation world has changed significantly -- current techniques have matured and new ones have appeared. This new edition deals with these new developments; in particular, there are sections on: 7 Transition path sampling and diffusive barrier crossing to simulaterare events 7 Dissipative particle dynamic as a course-grained simulation technique 7 Novel schemes to compute the long-ranged forces 7 Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian dynamics in the context constant-temperature and constant-pressure molecular dynamics simulations 7 Multiple-time step algorithms as an alternative for constraints 7 Defects in solids 7 The pruned-enriched Rosenbluth sampling, recoil-growth, and concerted rotations for complex molecules 7 Parallel tempering for glassy Hamiltonians Examples are included that highlight current applications and the codes of case studies are available on the World Wide Web. Several new examples have been added since the first edition to illustrate recent applications. Questionsare included in this new edition. No prior knowledge of computer simulation is assumed.
The Scientific American Book of the Brain: The Best Writing on Consciousness, I.Q. and Intelligence, Perception, Disorders of the Mind, and Much More by Scientific American, Arguably one of the most compelling and elusive territories of scientific research is the landscape of the human brain. From current research on the genetics of intelligence to new evidence being discovered in the battle against Parkinson's disease, the implications of the study of the human brain, and the equally fascinating human mind, are immense. The Scientific American Book of the Brain presents twenty-six cutting-edge articles on current brain research, by some of the biggest names working in the field: Is it true that most creative geniuses are plagued by a kind of madness? Kay Redfield Jamison reveals the link between creativity and mood disorders; are the brains of men and women equal in their capacity to learn and excel at cognitive tasks? Doreen Kimura puts forward scientific evidence that suggests men and women not only differ physically but also use different approaches to solve intellectual problems; how reliable is the human mind when it comes to memory? Elizabeth F. Loftus exposes how imagination and the power of suggestion can create "memories" of events that did not actually occur; why are certain children plagued by Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and what is the solution for such children? Russell A. Barkley posits that ADHD may arise when key brain circuits don't develop properly, perhaps because of an altered gene or genes. Introduced by Antonio R. Damasio and including chapters on mapping the brain; reasoning and intelligence; memory and learning; behavior; disease of the brain and disorder of the mind; and consciousness, The Scientific American Book of the Brain is a stimulating examination of today's most important and often controversial topics inbrain research.
Event (particle physics) - An event in particle physics describes one set of particle interactions occurring in a brief span of time, typically recorded together. At modern particle accelerators this refers to the interactions that occur as a result of one beam crossing inside a detector. Beyond Einstein World Wide Webcast - Beyond Einstein World Wide Webcast was a world wide webcast held on December 1, 2005 about the current physical challenges related to the theories of Albert Einstein. Mainly organized by CERN, the event was one of the milestones of the World Year of Physics. Three jet event - In particle physics, a three-jet event is an event with many particles in final state that appear to be clustered in three jets. A single jet consists of particles that fly off in roughly the same direction. Conserved current - In physics, a conserved current, J, obeys a conservation law.
