Liberal Theology
Beyond Liberation Theology From the ruins of promised liberations that cruelly oppressed the poor, the authors turn our attention to an authentic liberation -- spiritual, economic, and political -- that is informed by the gospel of Christ the Liberator. -- Richard John NeuhausPast adherents of [liberation] theology would do well to attend to these arguments simply because, as the authors so compellingly observe, the lives of millions of the poor and oppressed are at stake. -- Michael Cromartie, research fellow, Ethics and Public Policy Center, Washington, D.C.The authors concentrate on the really important issue -- what kind of liberation theology does the world really need? It needs a political theology based in the Bible and on sensible politics and economics, they say. It's hard to dispute that. This is an excellent and much needed book.
A Companion to Postmodern Theology by Graham Ward, This Companion provides readers with the definitive guide to theology and postmodernism, drawing on the work of those individuals who have made a distinctive contribution to the field, and whose work will be significant for the theologies written in the new millennium. Each essay is followed by a short account of the writer's previous work, enabling the reader to view the piece in context. The collection is prefaced with an introduction that situates postmodern theology with respect to other forms of contemporary theology, such as liberalism and conservatism, and evaluates the cultural context in which postmodern theology can be viewed. The Companion is divided into four sections: Liberal Postmodern Theologies; Postmodern Biblical Theologies; Critical Liberal Theologies Informed by Postmodernism; and Radical Orthodoxy. Each section is introduced by an explanation of why specific theologians have been chosen and of the logic of their various projects and emphases.
Spiritual Theology: The Theology of Yesterday for Help Today - Spiritual Theology is a book written by Diogenes Allen, professor emeritus at Princeton Theological Seminary. The book largely discusses the ancient traditions included within the "threefold way" in achieving habitual presence with God. Small-l liberal - The term small-l liberal is used, particularly in reference to Australian and Canadian politics, to distinguish between holders of an ideology of liberalism and adherents to either the Liberal Party of Australia or the Liberal Party of Canada (capital L). The term is also used in other countries which have Liberal parties to distinguish liberal thinkers in general from supporters of the Liberal Party. Atonement (Moral influence view) - The Moral influence view of the atonement is a doctrine in Christian theology related to the meaning and effect of the death of Jesus Christ and, while originating in the Middle Ages, has been largely taught in liberal Christian circles. Drawing primarily from the works of Pierre Abélard, the Moral influence theory teaches that Christ's death on the cross served for humankind as an example of God's great love and Christ's obedience. Reality - Reality in everyday usage means "everything that exists." The term "Reality," in its most liberal sense, includes everything that is, whether or not it is observable, accessible or understandable by science, philosophy, theology or any other system of analysis.
