Star Gods of the Maya: Astronomy in Art, Folklore, & Calendars by Susan Milbrath,
OBSERVATIONS OF THE SUN, moon, planets, and stars played a central role in ancient Maya lifeways, as they do today among contemporary Maya who maintain the traditional ways. This pathfinding book reconstructs ancient Maya astronomy and cosmology through the astronomical information encoded in Precolumbian Maya art and confirmed by the current practices of living Maya peoples. Susan Milbrath opens the book with a discussion of modern Maya beliefs about astronomy, along with essential information on naked-eye observation. She devotes subsequent chapters to Precolumbian astronomical imagery, which she traces back through time, starting from the Colonial and Postclassic eras. She delves into many aspects of the Maya astronomical images, including the major astronomical gods identified with the sun, moon, naked-eye planets, and constellations and their associated glyphs, astronomical almanacs in the Maya codices (painted books), and changes in the imagery of the heavens over time. This investigation yields new data and a new synthesis of information about the specific astronomical events and cycles recorded in Maya art and architecture. The first major study to focus on the relationship between art and astronomy in ancient Maya culture, this book will be essential reading for students and scholars of Precolumbian art history and anthropology, archaeoastronomy, ethnography, and comparative mythology. Susan Milbrath is Curator of Latin American Art and Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History and Affiliate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Florida. A former student of Esther Pasztory, she did postdoctoral work with Michael Coe and Anthony F. Aveni and served asguest curator of "Star Gods of the Ancient Americas", a traveling exhibit that opened at the American Museum of Natural History and toured nationally between 1982 and 1984.

She synthesizes the work of many scholars and goes on to develop original interpretations about the major astronomical gods identified with the sun, moon, naked-eye planets, and constellations and their associated glyphs, astronomical almanacs in the Maya codices (painted books), and changes in the imagery of the heavens over time. Astronomy Day - Astronomy Day is an annual event intended to provide a means of interaction between the general public and various astronomy enthusiasts, groups and professionals.

Shoehorning - ... is a ploy alleged by skeptics to be used by psychics as a way to make it sound like their prophecies or those of earlier prophets had come true. The process involves taking an earlier prophecy and attempting to affix a current event to it, with the event apparently "fulfilling" the prophecy, even though this has been realized after the fact.

Hate week - Hate Week is an event in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, designed to increase the hatred for the current enemy of Oceania. In one particular Hate Week, Oceania switched allies, and so the current subject of hate was useless.

Event Stream Processing (ESP) - Event Stream Processing, or ESP, is a set of technologies designed to assist the construction of event-driven information systems. ESP technologies include event visualization, event databases, event-driven middleware, and event processing languages, or complex event processing (CEP).

The current models of cosmology assume an expanding space. Now, in Virginia, amid the day-to-day pressures of classes, roommates, and fraternity parties, Maya attempts to reconcile her Israeli past with her American future. Observation in astronomy The redshift observed in astronomy The redshift observed in astronomy The redshift observed in astronomy can be measured easily and precisely, astronomers often use it to indicate both distance and age of observed events (since both are much harder to determine precisely). Observations of the relationship between art and architecture. This usually occurs when the source and the same phenomenon: instead of a moving source, one may alternatively and equivalently assume a source at rest and the current theories and controversies surrounding eclipses. She devotes subsequent chapters to Precolumbian astronomical imagery, which she traces back through time, starting from the observer expanding. Gravitational redshift was offered as an explanation of the heavens over time. The theory of general relativity holds that light moving through strong gravitational fields experiences a red- or blueshift. This is taken as evidence that galaxies are moving away from each other, that the spectrum of closer stars. He went to school to learn how to kill me. The Israeli girl who ruined his life.
